Prelude Music Foundation brings singing, dancing, and playful learning
to preschool classrooms in underserved communities in Houston.
The Prelude Music Foundation Internship Program is dedicated to providing hands-on learning experiences for college students pursuing careers in music, music education, education, special education, and related fields.
​
Through observation, active participation, and guided instruction, interns will gain a deeper understanding of early childhood music education, the role of music in cognitive and social development, and inclusive teaching strategies for diverse learners.
This program seeks to equip future educators with the skills and knowledge necessary to create engaging, meaningful, and developmentally appropriate musical experiences for children of all abilities.

You’ll gain valuable internship and credit hours, a completion certificate, and (upon request) a letter of recommendation from our organization. This internship is also a great opportunity to present as a capstone project for music education.​

Internship Requirements & Application Process
​Requirements:
Once admitted into the Prelude Music Foundation Internship Program, interns are expected to:

Pass a background check prior to beginning work.

Set a flexible schedule in collaboration with the Internship Director

Track your internship hours and participate in bi-weekly Zoom check-ins with the Internship Director.

Commit to at least one semester (no need to reapply if continuing for the full year, but ongoing communication with your Director is required).

Visit schools weekly as part of your hands-on training and teaching experience.

Internship Curriculum & Responsibilities
Our internship program is designed to immerse you in music-based early childhood education through a structured, hands-on experience.
Phase 1: Orientation & Introduction (Weeks 1–2)

Introduction to Prelude Music Foundation’s mission and teaching philosophy.

Overview of classroom structure and expectations.
-
Get introduced to key songs in the program and their educational purposes (phonics, counting, social skills, etc.).

Observe teachers in the classroom.
Phase 2: Classroom Engagement & Assistance (Weeks 3–6)

Assist teachers with distributing and collecting classroom instruments (sticks, shakers, scarves).

Engage with students by modeling participation and supporting classroom activities.

Understand the role of music in cognitive and motor development.
Phase 3: Observation & Reflection (Weeks 7–10)​

Learn how to adapt lessons for diverse learning needs.

Participate in discussions about the impact of music on early childhood development.

Maintain a reflective journal reflecting on experiences, challenges, and insights.

Deliver a final presentation on an assigned topic related to music education or therapy
By the end of the internship, you will:
